MOT View: A week in the life of Leeds United fans as Whites finally seal Premier League return
What a week it has been for everyone involved with Leeds United.
The Whites have finally sealed their return to the Premier League after 16 years away, but just how did they do it?
For once, Marcelo Bielsa and his squad were handed massive favours from other sides, but they made sure to take care of their own business as well.
It has been a crazy week in the Championship, starting with Brentford sealing three points against Preston North End at Griffin Park – a result which put them within touching distance of the top-two.
Sky Sports made sure that Leeds have had to play last out of the top three in each of their last three games – convenient.
All eyes were on Leeds to respond on Thursday, and that is exactly what they did. It was probably one of the worst performances against Barnsley though in the 1-0, although there were no complaints from us.
Barnsley had double the number of shots on goal, completed more tackles and dribbles according to WhoScored – but three points were all that mattered.
The ball was back in the court of West Brom on Friday and sitting down to watch the game, we expected them to cruise against Huddersfield.
45 minutes went by and it was 1-1, and we started to ask the question, could this be happening? The Terriers weren’t looking great, but more importantly, neither were the Baggies.
There were less than 10 minutes to go when the ball rolled through to Emile Smith-Rowe, and his effort seemed to take an eternity to hit the back of the net, but when it did – you could hear the screams from one side of West Yorkshire to the other.
Leeds had done it, and all those trips as fans to the likes of Rochdale, Stockport and Colchester were finally worth it.
The job wasn’t done there though, could Leeds end their 28-year wait to lift a league trophy? We would once again find out sooner than expected.
Brentford had made a lot of noise over the past month with their winning streak, but when it mattered they crumbled – losing to Stoke on Saturday to hand Leeds the title.
If this week couldn’t get any better, we all got to watch the Whites easily sweep aside Derby on Sunday, all after the Rams giving us a guard of honour.
The celebrations were clear to see at Millenium Square, as we were able to watch fans (from a distance) celebrate the night away – it was amazing.
We can’t stop smiling, and when Liam Cooper finally lifts that title on Wednesday, those smiles will only get bigger.
