Mateo Retegui £15m transfer fee should be no problem for Leeds United as Sky Sports Germany reporter shares update

Leeds United have been tipped as one of several teams chasing prolific striker Mateo Retegui – and his potential price tag shouldn’t be anything to worry about.

Rai Sports journalist Ciro Venerato shared (4 April) that the Whites, alongside both Milan teams and Eintracht Frankfurt, were interested in the 23-year-old’s services this summer.

Retegui, who is currently on loan at Tigre, recently burst onto the world stage when he scored against Gareth Southgate’s England team in the most recent batch of Euro 2024 qualifiers.

With Leeds United in the mix to sign the striker, Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has now provided an update about the forwards asking price.

Taking to his personal Twitter account on Tuesday (4 April), he wrote: “Talks with his management took place. More rounds will follow.

“Understand that boss Krösche is pushing a lot. High-quality striker. The biggest problem: His price. Probably more than €15m.”

The price tag of £15million may be an issue for the likes of German club Frankfurt but would surely pose no issues for the Whites, especially considering the 49ers Enterprises’ imminent takeover of the club.

In the January transfer window, the club forked out a club-record £35.5million for French striker Georginio Rutter while possessing an option to buy Juventus loanee Weston McKennie for a further £30million.

It wouldn’t come as a surprise to see such spending power replicated in the summer transfer window, especially if the 49ers takeover is completed in the near future.

Despite Rutter looking the real deal during his time at Hoffenheim, he has struggled to adapt to life at Elland Road and is yet to get his Premier League goalscoring account underway.

On the other hand, Retegui has continued his rapid ascension up the footballing pyramid in recent times, having netted 29 goals from 51 appearances at Tigres.

The Italian international looks like a gem of a player and a brilliant option for Leeds to pursue in the summer transfer window.
