Mateo Joseph key to Leeds United promotion hopes as footage emerges of what he did for Spain
Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph continued his run of scoring form with a well-taken strike for Spain’s Under-21s side against Scotland.
Joseph came off the bench in the 66th minute and found the back of the net just three minutes later, putting La Roja 2-1 up with a sweeping finish which proved to be the winner at Tynecastle Stadium.
The Spaniard had previously netted his first league goal for the Whites against Hull City on 31 August, and his strong form for club and country should crystallise his spot as Daniel Farke’s starting striker.
Spanish football account Seleccion-Rojita posted on X (6 September) to state that Joseph now had: “Three games with (Spain) and two goals. Both coming off the bench.
“It’s very opportunistic to say this now, but Mateo (Joseph) adapts much better to the national team style than Samu (Omorodion). It’s just a matter of time, training and matches.”
The touch-paper is lit for Leeds United striker Mateo Joseph
After failing to find the back of the net in his first three league games of the new campaign, Joseph broke his duck with a well-taken near-post volley to open the scoring against Hull City last time out.
With Joseph now off the mark in the Championship and continuing his good form for Spain’s Under-21s despite not having a starting role for the latter, expect the floodgates to open for the 20-year-old.
An impressive pre-season campaign saw Joseph score four goals in four games and put himself in pole position to start in attack, and that is now being reflected on scoreboards for both club and country.
Joseph did already have two assists to his name, both of which came in the Whites’ 2-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, but now he’s finding the net on multiple fronts, the goals could begin to flow at speed.
United’s new number 19 is repaying Farke’s faith in his ability to lead the line, and if he can keep up the form he’s showing for his country, Joseph’s club will be reaping the benefits at the end of the season.
