Leeds will be far from thrilled with Charlie Crew’s setback at Doncaster Rovers

Leeds’ teenage midfielder Charlie Crew has enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months.

After Crew made his Leeds debut in November 2024, he was then sent on loan to Doncaster Rovers, doing fantastically well and became adored by the Donny fans.

Crew was sent back to Doncaster this season to continue his development and gain more first-team minutes.

The long-term vision remains for the young midfielder to develop into a solid Premier League player for Leeds.

However, he has recently suffered a setback that will prove annoying to everyone involved in the deal.

Charlie Crew dropped from Doncaster Squad after poor performance in Carabao Cup

Crew will be the first to admit that he hasn’t played to his full potential for Doncaster Rovers this season.

The 19-year-old has made seven appearances, but has often been slightly off the pace as Rovers have suffered mixed results in League One.

Crew was brought on as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup earlier in September, but arguably delivered his worst performance yet in a Doncaster shirt.

He often gave the ball away cheaply, leading fans on social media to question what had happened to the sharp young midfielder from the previous season.

Rovers manager Grant McCann responded by dropping him from the squad for last weekend’s fixture against Luton Town.

There has been no suggestion that Crew is injured, meaning this decision was likely made based on his poor form.

Charlie Crew has the mentality to recover from Doncaster Rovers setback

Leeds chiefs will hardly be thrilled that Crew was omitted from the Doncaster squad. He was sent out on loan to gain first-team experience, after all.

However, those at Elland Road will know that he has the mentality to recover from this setback to regain his place in the squad.

Crew has been praised for his mindset and willingness to learn by Leeds’ academy coaches. Those involved with the Wales international squad think highly of him as well, enough to give Crew his international debut at such a tender age.

He may be back in the frame sooner than expected, given how Doncaster played at Luton.

After the game, McCann broke it down in his post-match press conference.

If there are any qualities that Crew definitely possesses, it’s ambition and the desire to improve. Leeds chiefs will be hoping that’ll be enough to see him included in the squad for Doncaster’s next game.
