Leeds United will be furious as EFL announce Leicester City points deduction ruling
Leeds United will be absolutely furious after the EFL ruled that they do not have the power to enforce a points deduction on Leicester this season.
It was announced by the Premier League last month that the Foxes face a potential points deduction should they return to the top flight after breaching PSR rules last season, when they were relegated to the Championship.
But there were some calls for Leicester to have points deducted from them this season, with the race for promotion between themselves, Ipswich and Leeds United leaving just one point between the top three with four games remaining.
However in a statement on Friday (12 April), the EFL revealed that after a hearing, it was decided they have no power to implement a points deduction this season for the charges brought against Leicester.
Why will Leeds United be angry Leicester City can’t be deducted points?
Ultimately the charges were for a period where Leicester were in the Premier League, and they breached in a year where they went on to be relegated.
This season it’s believed that they have been within their limits and rulings, but the fact is that they could now go up to the Premier League at the expense of another team and then start the campaign on minus points.
That feels unfair to teams like Leeds and Ipswich who have battled hard all season, while Leicester will essentially have a delayed punishment if found guilty.
A points deduction implemented this season, just like it was for Everton and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, would mean Leeds and Ipswich are in a far better position to go up.
Leeds will be annoyed at the whole situation, but the EFL having their hands tied just sums up the state of the English game right now when it comes to these financial charges and the FFP rules.
