Leeds United to be on high alert as Fabrizio Romano issues update on Ben Godfrey
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Ben Godfrey will be allowed to depart Atalanta in January amid transfer links to Leeds United.
The ex-Everton defender was linked with a switch to Elland Road in December (TBR) with game time limited at Atalanta and Romano has since reported via his X account that Godfrey will be allowed to leave this January.
While it was understood that Leeds will only have a chance to sign him if they achieve promotion, that stance may change given the update on his departure.
With Pascal Struijk linked with a move to Tottenham (Graeme Bailey via Leeds United News), the Whites may be looking for defensive reinforcements in the transfer window and Godfrey could re-emerge as a priority.
Leeds United need to show ambition in January
So far, the Whites have enjoyed a successful campaign with the occasional blip and the key to maintaining that will be a successful January window.
It was suggested by Graham Smyth that a departure for Joe Gelhardt will be the only expected business from the league leaders but if they are to remain there, that will have to change.
The likes of Sunderland and Sheffield United will undoubtedly be looking to strengthen their squad and despite being three points clear at the top, the Whites cannot afford to rest on their laurels, they need to be active.

Championship football can be a relentless prospect and those who succeed are those who are proactive in their approach and a failure to strengthen would show a complete disregard for that.
While a deal for Godfrey may be unrealistic given his likely suitors, it is that kind of deal Leeds need to chase and if they can do so, they can put one foot in the Premier League.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites could sign this Premier League defender.
