Leeds United suffer another transfer blow as Gustavo Hamer agrees £15m Coventry City exit

This transfer window has, largely, been something of a pretty torrid dream for Leeds United.

Don’t get it completely twisted, there have been some successes. Ethan Ampadu looks a shrewd piece of business for the Championship, Sam Byram offered cheap and quality cover at full-back, Karl Darlow is a decent addition between the sticks, and Joe Rodon strengthens a wobbly central defence.

But, Daniel Farke has also seen Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Robin Koch, Brendon Aaronson and Max Wober make use of exit clauses to depart Elland Road on loan, while Rodrigo has left, Tyler Adams looks certain to go to Chelsea, and Wilfried Gnonto is angling for a move to Everton.

Then, it looked as though Leeds were going to pull off a brilliant piece of business to reunite Farke with Max Aarons, who he gave a debut to at Norwich City, before the versatile full-back took the Premier League riches to join Bournemouth.

And the lure of the top flight has proven too much for another Leeds wanted to sign, with the Telegraph journalist Mick McGrath reporting that Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer is to join Sheffield United in a £15million deal.

McGrath added that Hamer is set to undergo a medical at Bramall Lane and will not be training with Coventry on Friday (11 August).

Hamer would have injected a real dose of quality into a Leeds midfield that is struggling for options as things stand, but it is another sign of how hard relegation has hit them.

Some mind-boggling clauses have seen them lose millions and millions of talent on loan exits, while their biggest targets are being lured by Premier League clubs.

Farke still has time to work some magic in the market but the German will surely be glad to see the end of this window.

In other Leeds United news, the real reason Willy Gnonto wants to leave for Everton has emerged.
