Leeds United must keep loanee Charlie Cresswell at Elland Road as worrying transfer news emerges

Leeds United must quickly secure the future of loanee Charlie Cresswell after news emerged his future at Elland Road could be “uncertain” with approaches from various clubs expected this summer.

The young defender is currently enjoying a thrilling loan spell at Millwall and has finally found his feet in London recently, enjoying a run of games in a side challenging for the playoffs.

Journalist Phil Hay reported on 3 March that the talented defender’s immediate future at Elland Road is “uncertain” and it’s safe to assume there will be approaches for the youngster in the summer.

“Cresswell’s situation is more uncertain. He’s on loan at Millwall and, having been a bit in and out for a while, he’s playing regularly for a side who are right in the mix for a play-off place but Leeds were willing to listen to offers for him in January,” as quoted by The Athletic.

“What Leeds have to ask themselves, on the back of what is developing into a good campaign at Millwall, is whether backing him and keeping him makes more sense than cashing in on him.”

Gary Rowett, Cresswell’s current manager at Millwall recently described the young defender as “outstanding” which is something to consider.

With the Whites potentially going through a stark rebuild this summer, especially in the centre of defence with the likes of Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper and Robin Koch all facing uncertain futures, Cresswell’s value and importance to the Whites board could soar through the roof.

The 20-year-old centre-back has enjoyed a sensational loan at The Den, scoring five goals and laying on an assist in 26 Sky Bet Championship games, highlighting his incredible potential and current ability, something the Whites cannot ignore in their summer squad revamp.

Cresswell was on the scoresheet yet again on Tuesday evening [14 March] as Millwall ran out 2-1 winners over Swansea City as they further cemented their position in the Championship playoff places.

The 20-year-old won 100% of his tackles, registered three clearances, three blocks, won four of his five aerial duels and managed four passes into the final third as well as his fifth goal of the season.

His all-action style and rapid development in South London simply cannot be ignored at Elland Road, and he may well be ready for the next level in the Premier League next season.

English top-flight clubs may be circling for his signature but the West Yorkshire outfit must ensure he remains with them, especially if they secure their Premier League status next season.
