Leeds United midfielder Weston McKennie flying high in Premier League, official stats show major strength in one area

Weston McKennie has been garnering plenty of attention amid his brief loan spell at Leeds United, with the midfielder landing a regular starting spot since his January move from Juventus.

But it remains to be seen whether the Premier League side will make a permanent move for the American international, who could solve many problems in the club’s midfield.

McKennie looks set to be a crucial player in the club’s fight for Premier League survival this season, particularly amid the injury to fellow midfielder and compatriot Tyler Adams.

Analysing McKennie’s stats from his 580 minutes in the Premier League so far, Leeds United StatZone notes that the US international has won 28 duels, as well as making 39 recoveries and nine tackles. Moreover, he averages 47 touches per game and 34 passes per game.

But perhaps most impressive is the midfielder’s 82% passing accuracy, a hugely difficult feat for someone playing centrally in such a high-pressure and competitive league.

It seems there is slight division among fans about whether Leeds should pursue his permanent signature, but the club may have to act fast and smart if they do want him to stay, with McKennie no doubt attracting suitors elsewhere.

A long-term future at Juventus seems unlikely, but the likes of Premier League club Aston Villa have been linked with the midfielder in recent times [Tutto Sport].

Any move from Leeds will, of course, be severely impacted by what division they are playing in next season, with the USA international highly unlikely to settle for a spot in the Championship.

Leeds are currently 14th in the Premier League table, just two points away from the relegation zone and just three off rock bottom.

The struggles perhaps make McKennie’s feats even more impressive, with the 24-year-old showing he can remain calm and composed on the ball under pressure, as well as proving he can pick out a pass when the time comes.

McKennie took no time at all in replacing Marc Roca in the starting XI thanks to his fast start to life in England, although the pair will now play together in midfield after Adams’s injury.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites are reportedly not in the race to bring former star midfielder Kalvin Philips back to the club at the end of the season.
