Leeds United may have to wait until April to hire manager amid Sam Allardyce appointment hunch

Sam Allardyce has a hunch that Steven Gerrard may well be Leeds United’s next manager if Daniel Farke is sacked.

However, Leeds may have to wait until April to appoint the Englishman if indeed that is the case.

Speaking on his No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce said Leeds appointing Gerrard is not “wild speculation”.

Allardyce pointed to the obvious links between Leeds and Rangers, with both teams being under the 49ers Enterprises’ umbrella.

Gerrard guided Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 and recently held talks over returning to Ibrox, but ultimately turned the job down.

Steven Gerrard unlikely to return to work until April

Gerrard has been mentioned as a replacement for Daniel Farke, who is seemingly living on borrowed time at Elland Road.

Farke guided Leeds to Premier League promotion and made a solid start to the Whites’ first campaign back in the top flight.

However, a downturn in results has seen Leeds drop into the relegation zone and Farke is now facing the sack at Elland Road.

While Allardyce may have a hunch of sorts that Gerrard could be next in line for Leeds, The Mirror suggests otherwise.

In a report via its website on Wednesday, it is claimed that Gerrard wants to return to management with an English club, but not until April.

This is down to tax laws where he currently resides in the Middle East, meaning he would have to stump up around £10million if he returns to the United Kingdom before April.

If that is the case, it goes without saying Leeds will not wait around to appoint Gerrard as Farke’s successor.

This is the game that could see Daniel Farke sacked

Football is a brutal industry, and that is why Farke surely himself accepts he will be out of a job unless Leeds start winning games.

The problem being, of course, the Whites face a trip to Manchester City next up, followed by home games with Chelsea and Liverpool.

While Liverpool may be badly out of form, they will still enter that clash at Elland Road as favourites on 6 December.

Should each of those tough fixtures end in defeat, that is when Paraag Marathe and Co. may well pull the trigger.

The new manager – whoever that may be – will then have easier looking fixtures, on the face of it, with Brentford and Crystal Palace to get him going.

Nobody wants to see someone sacked, but it may well be for the best in Leeds’ case if an adequate replacement is lined up ready to go.
