Leeds United may be handed Mateo Joseph escape route as Daniel Farke frustration emerges

Leeds United look set to be presented with another problem surrounding Mateo Joseph’s future at the end of the season.

The future of the Spain U21 international was one of the major talking points of the summer after the Whites’ promotion to the Premier League, and he ultimately ended up leaving the club.

Joseph eventually left Leeds to join Mallorca on a season-long loan, but the current agreement does not contain any sort of purchase option, with the Spanish outfit priced out by his valuation.

Daniel Farke and Co. will be focused solely on their survival fight for now, but Joseph’s future is likely to become a problem again next summer.

Leeds must exploit Real Betis frustration to sell Mateo Joseph

Real Betis were heavily linked with Joseph in the summer, but ultimately could not get a move over the line.

The forward himself was keen to join the Seville-based side, and ruffled the feathers of several people at Elland Road with the manner in which he pushed for a move.

The 22-year-old didn’t go on Leeds’ pre-season tour to Germany, as he tried everything that he could to force through a move away.

Real Betis were left frustrated by the Whites’ desire to avoid a purchase option, which ultimately caused the deal to break down, according to ABC.

Joseph was understood to have been “frustrated” with Farke over the summer, which certainly suggests that the relationship between the pair is unlikely to be salvaged in future.

The last thing that Leeds will want is to be left with a player that they cannot sell, and also doesn’t want to be there, but Betis could hand them an escape route in that regard.

With that in mind, it surely makes sense for the West Yorkshire outfit to go back to Betis with the offer of a permanent deal next summer, and they would surely be happy to oblige.

A new striker is a must for the Whites in January

Leeds do have the option to recall Joseph in the January transfer window, but they are surely now at the stage where they need to eye bigger and more ambitious targets.

The youngster hardly started for them in the Championship, and that certainly wouldn’t have changed in the Premier League.

While there is little point in bringing Joseph back early, Leeds certainly need another option to call upon at the top of the pitch, as neither Dominic Calvert-Lewin nor Lukas Nmecha have hit the ground running.

A regular goalscorer is a must if you want to stay in the Premier League, and that is a glaring weakness in Leeds’ squad at the moment.
