Leeds United loanee Darko Gyabi gives Daniel Farke yet another reason to recall him in January
Leeds United have had quite a rollercoaster of a season so far, to say the least. The Whites currently sit fifth in the Championship, three points adrift of the league leaders Sunderland.
Daniel Farke’s men were looking likely to be just one point away from the Mackems after their game against Regis Le Bris’ men on 4 October.
However, thanks to a 97th-minute Illan Meslier howler where he allowed Junior Firpo’s deflection to hit the back of the net, they only came away from the Stadium of Light with one point as the game ended 2-2.
The fact the West Yorkshire outfit also finds themselves without both Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev is also a cause for concern.
However, one Leeds player who’s loving life at the moment is Darko Gyabi. The defensive-midfielder is currently on loan with Plymouth Argyle and has played an important role in Wayne Rooney’s team thus far.
And, after his recent performance for England’s under-20s where he managed to bag a stellar goal, he’s given Leeds yet another reason to bring him back to Elland Road in January.
Leeds United should recall Darko Gyabi in January
It’s believed that Leeds will only have a short window of time in the January window to decide whether or not to recall Gyabi [Plymouth Live, 9 July].
The midfielder has been in decent form for the Pilgrims this term and has earned himself one assist in nine Championship outings.
Although his attacking returns will be more than welcome, it’s his defensive capabilities that Leeds will likely desire more.
He’s defensive-minded like Ampadu and Gruev which would make him an ideal partner for Leeds’ two remaining senior defensive midfielders Ao Tanaka and Joe Rothwell and would help contribute to a more balanced midfield.
Although Max Wober is set to return from injury within the next six weeks or so and could cover for Ampadu, it wouldn’t harm Leeds to welcome the 20-year-old back to their ranks so he could provide additional cover for the rest of the campaign.
Especially if they get hit with another injury crisis like they’ve found themselves in.
