Leeds United: Legal battle now on cards amid Leicester City points deduction threat
Leeds United could sue Leicester City if they fail to reach the automatic promotion places or go up via the playoffs this season as a result of their possible profit and sustainability breach.
This is according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who suggested that if the club that finishes third finishes within six points of Leicester, they could have a case against them.
The current league leaders have reportedly breached the Premier League profit and sustainability rules, with a points deduction on the cards even if they remain in the Championship – but not this season.
“It’s very frustrating,” Maguire shared, speaking on The Price Of Football podcast [14 March].
“What we can also see is what happens if Leicester City are promoted this season, and the side that finishes third doesn’t go up through the playoffs, but if a six-point deduction had gone through they would have finished second, are they now going to sue Leicester?”
Another legal battle on cards for Leeds United and 49ers Enterprises
Since taking over at Elland Road in the summer, 49ers Enterprises have found themselves embroiled in several legal battles, or potential legal battles, with regard to the club’s position.
It was originally mooted that, as a result of the points deduction handed to Everton in the Premier League, Leeds were among several clubs intending to take the matter to court over potential damages following their relegation.
They believed that Everton had cheated and gained an advantage against the relegated clubs and had not been punished in time to make up for the losses from relegation. That case, however, was later dismissed.

With the potential case against Leicester similar to the one against Everton, it would be interesting to see the route the club takes with regard to a possible legal claim, but it is fair to say they will have a case to make should it come to it.
The 49ers’ legal team will be keeping a close eye as new developments emerge in the Championship.
In other Leeds United news, a £7million transfer bid has now been made.
