Leeds United learn winner of Harrison Burrows race amid medical update

Leeds United will have to look elsewhere for a new left-back with Harrison Burrows closing in on a move to Sheffield United.

Sky Sports journalist Mark McAdam posted on X to say that Burrows was currently undergoing a medical with the Blades, before completing a £3million transfer to Bramall Lane from Peterborough United.

With Leeds having reportedly held late talks with the Posh in an attempt to hijack the move for Burrows [TBR Football, 23 July], this new development cannot be a long-term setback for the Whites.

Despite £3m for Burrows being an “incredible piece of business” for a “real leader” according to McAdam, Daniel Farke will be confident that he can find another left-sided defender of similar quality.

Leeds United have avoided high-risk Harrison Burrows transfer

While signing the stand-out defender in League One ahead of their Yorkshire and promotion rivals Sheffield United would have been a coup for the Whites, it hardly reflects their current transfer policy.

Returning to the Premier League this season – having come within a whisker of doing so in 2023/24 – is the primary focus for the Whites, thus gambling on Burrows would have been a big risk.

For all his potential, Burrows has only played one season at Championship level, with the Whites instead needing to sign players of a higher calibre – ideally a level above the quality of England’s second tier.

Signing Jayden Bogle, from Sheffield United no less, exemplified this attitude, spending £5m on a player with ample experience in the Premier League and two Championship promotions under his belt.

Shelling out £3m on a player with neither of those boxes ticked would be too much of a gamble in such a pivotal transfer window, and while Burrows may prove to be a hit at Bramall Lane, United must aim higher as they look for an understudy to Junior Firpo.
