Leeds United learn Josh Sargent transfer fate as £20m deal agreed

Josh Sargent has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds over the last 12 months.

With the transfer window closed and not reopening until the summer, English clubs are unable to add players to their squad, though rumours still float on a daily basis.

And one of the most common rumours has seen Leeds linked with a move to sign Norwich City striker Sargent, even before they were promoted to the Premier League.

The USMNT forward has scored goals consistently for the Canaries in the Championship, thus attracting interest from several Premier League clubs.

However, with a deal now agreed for the 26-year-old, on his birthday no less, Leeds now know what they need to do.

Norwich City agree Josh Sargent sale

Leeds were not the only Premier League club linked with a move for the striker, with clubs such as Everton, Sunderland and West Ham also looely mooted to clinch a deal.

However, all of the above look set to miss out on his signature anytime soon, after it was reported by Paddy Davitt and Simon Jones that the Canaries have agreed to sell him to Toronto.

Sargent will travel Stateside to undergo a medical with the MLS outfit, with the deal believed to be worth in the region of £30million.

The 26-year-old has hit double figures for goals in all three of his previous full campaigns in the Championship, and had scored eight in 24 for Norwich this season, before his absence, which started at the beginning of January.

It was clear that Leeds held an interest, but they will have to look elsewhere in the summer to bolster their forward line, not necessarily away from the Championship.

The other Championship striker Leeds could sign

Sargent’s links certainly caused a mixed reaction, given that it was the same league that Joel Piroe scored goals for fun in.

And while that standpoint holds value, you can sense when someone is a natural goalscorer.

One player who also fits that bill is Haji Wright, who has also been linked with a move to Elland Road over the last 12 months.

Like Sargent, Wright has reached double figures for goals in every season he has played in England, and after his hat-trick in Coventry’s win over Middlesbrough, he now has 14 goals in 31 appearances across all competitions.
