Leeds United ‘take huge gamble’ in race for Premier League promotion

Leeds United ended the winter transfer window without making a single signing, and it is a huge risk taken by the Championship leaders

The Whites are enjoying a successful campaign to date but surprised almost everyone when they failed to complete any incoming business in the now-closed transfer window.

Despite several players departing the club, and despite links to various attacking players, their inability to conclude any business in that regard seems like a risk that just wasn’t worth taking.

All three of Leeds’ direct title rivals strengthened their squad massively, and while Daniel Farke’s side have a healthy advantage at the top of the table, the question remains as to whether they may be forced to regret their decision come the end of the campaign.

While they haven’t lost any real quality, the squad arguably finishes the window weaker than it was at the start, albeit that is marginal as the occasionally used Joe Gelhardt was allowed to leave.

Daniel Farke has to achieve promotion with Leeds United

The Whites needed to take advantage of the window – it really is as simple as that. Of course, Leeds still have every chance to go on and win the Championship but that ambition could have been achieved a lot easier if they were able to inject some additional quality into the side.

Leeds still have a remarkable squad for the Championship, and certainly one that is more than capable of retaining its place at the summit, but they have certainly set themselves up for ridicule if they fail to do so.

However, the focus for Farke has to be on the pitch now. With all of the distractions out of the way, results and performances are the only things that matter, the former especially.

An encounter against Sunderland could be the deciding fixture given how closely contested the top four is, and with Sheffield United still to Burnley, the Whites need to take advantage.

Leeds have certainly set themselves up for an exciting but nail-biting conclusion to the Championship[p season.

In other Leeds United news, the Whites agreed terms for a free transfer exit on deadline day.
