Leeds United have goalkeeper dilemma as Alexander Nubel transfer set to be completed

Leeds United are in a state of transition this summer and the goalkeeper department is an area where Daniel Farke is reportedly after reinforcement.

But one major link this transfer window now looks unlikely to come to fruition with Bayern Munich goalkeeper Alexander Nubel apparently remaining in Germany.

Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg reported on Twitter (23 July) that Nubel could complete his move to Bundesliga side Stuttgart on Sunday, although he is still awaiting Bayern to ratify the move.

Plettenberg wrote: ” @VfB is the most likely destination for Alexander Nubel. The deal could be finalized today.

“Nubel will not attend the team presentation in the Allianz Arena today. Bayern still has to clarify last details with Stuttgart. Nubel has not yet received the (green) light from Bayern.”

A move for Nubel, who was once touted as a successor to the great Manuel Neuer at the Allianz Arena, always felt a little ambitious but the latest development does leave Leeds in somewhat of a quandary.

Illan Meslier has become established as the number one at Elland Road, but Phil Hay reported in the Athletic (17 July) that Leeds are open to selling the Frenchman after some questionable form over the past two seasons.

There is an understandable feeling that a move is what both parties need, though as yet there does not appear to be a clear favourite for Meslier’s signature.

Another target Leeds have focused on is Newcastle United shot-stopper Karl Darlow, but there is heavy competition for his signature from Premier League side Bournemouth.

Leeds boss Farke has several headaches to sort with his squad before the window closes and the question of who will play between the sticks remains very much among them.
