Leeds United have appointed the perfect man in Daniel Farke to get the best out of Crysencio Summerville

Few expected to see Crysencio Summerville’s name listed among the substitutes for Leeds United as they faced Hull City on Wednesday, given his start to the season.

Ultimately, it didn’t take long for the 21-year-old to be introduced following an injury to Wilfried Gnonto midway through the second half and he once again impressed for Daniel Farke’s side, creating the most chances in the match with three and winning the most duels with seven [Fotmob].

Farke suggested that the decision to rest Summerville was partly down to some minor injuries in pre-season and heaped praise on the 21-year-old’s reaction to being dropped following the full-time whistle.

As quoted by Leeds Live (21 September) he said: “This is exactly what we need, to think about the side [and] don’t be annoyed when you’re sometimes not in the starting line-up. It’s more like when you’re on the pitch, give everything for this group.

“His reaction, not just in possession, because he’s an outstanding creative player, we know this, but also how hard he worked for the team. This is exactly what we need and many compliments to him.”

Leeds Live reporter Beren Cross also compared this assessment of the 21-year-old to that of Jesse Marsch during his time at Elland Road, who would often call out the Dutchman in front of his teammates for his professionalism, punctuality and off-the-ball work ethic.

Although the American’s approach was likely with the aim of getting a rise out of Summerville to reach his maximum potential, that coaching method didn’t prove particularly effective with the midfielder as he only managed 12 starts in the Premier League, although he did register six goal involvements.

Farke’s more reserved, calm approach both with his side and when talking to the media has managed to bring the best out of Summerville and allowed him to perform to the best of his abilities, making him one of Leeds’ most important players in the early stages of this season.

Angus Kinnear had praised the German boss for his calmness during the chaotic summer transfer window at Elland Road in a time when he believes most managers would have not been able to cope with a huge turnover of players and the drama of the likes of Gnonto, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra all trying to force their way out of the club [The Square Ball Podcast, 7 September].

Although Farke’s time in charge of Leeds has been brief so far, it feels as though with each passing match and performance, he is proving that he was the perfect man to bring belief back not only to Summerville but to the entirety of the football club.

He is proving to be the perfect man.
