Leeds United given chance to sign Joyskim Dawa in bargain January transfer

Daniel Farke has endured a mixed start to his second season as Leeds United manager on the results front.

Their 2024/25 season has felt like a rollercoaster, to say the least. The West Yorkshire outfit currently sit fifth in the Championship table, three points behind the league leaders Sunderland.

Although this may seem like a decent performance to some, when the fact Leeds were expected to be challenging for the title is taken into account, it suggests they are somewhat off the pace so far.

Of all the areas in the Whites’ team, the partnership of Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk has been one of the most formidable.

However, thanks to injuries to both Ethan Ampadu and Max Wober, the Whites have been left rather light in defence.

So, it’s not a surprise to see Leeds linked with centre-backs such as Joyskim Dawa [the Mirror, 13 October] ahead of the January transfer window.

Although Dawa’s name isn’t one that many will have heard of, the fact he’s won a man of the match award for Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League this term and has a release clause worth around £4million in his contract outlines why Leeds are showing an interest in the defender.

Joyskim Dawa would be a stellar addition for Leeds United

The Whites’ current injury crisis has caused them a whole host of issues. Farke has been left with just two senior defensive midfielders and two senior centre-backs for at least the next five weeks until Wober returns.

Many expected Leeds’ depth to be an issue this term and unsurprisingly, they’ve already run into a roadblock in their quest for the Championship title.

Obviously, it’s still early in the season and things could fall into place in the blink of an eye but for now, it feels as if Leeds have found themselves on the back foot.

Dawa’s addition wouldn’t turn around Leeds’ form instantly but it would be a smart transfer to make.

His release clause of £4m also makes the deal feel like a no-brainer and is more or less a risk-free investment for the Whites as they’d likely get the money back that they paid for him, even if things don’t quite work out. All that considered, this is a move that simply must be sanctioned.
