Leeds United: Georginio Rutter surely sweating on Championship accolade amid injury update

Georginio Rutter has been in excellent form for Leeds United this season, so much so that the Frenchman is on the verge of breaking a Championship record.

With 15 assists to his name so far, one more than Ipswich Town’s Leif Davis and three more than Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, the 21-year-old has been one of the most in-form players in the division.

Only one player has recorded more assists in a single Championship season – Emiliano Buendia – a player whom Daniel Farke will know incredibly well due to their time at Norwich City together.

How far off is Georginio Rutter from breaking the Championship record at Leeds United?

Revealing the statistic via X on Sunday 17 March, OPTA’s Jonny Cooper wrote: “Since Opta has this recorded in 2013-14, only one player has more open play assists in a Championship season than Georginio Rutter this season (15). That was Emiliano Buendía for Daniel Farke’s Norwich in 2020-21 (16).”

Considering Rutter’s form this season, the Leeds man has left him with plenty of opportunity to beat Buendia’s record, with eight matches of the Championship campaign left to play.

However, Daniel Farke’s most recent injury update would suggest that Rutter may be getting a little hot under the collar, especially if he has eyes on the prize already.

Phil Hay revealed the latest news on Rutter via X on Wednesday (27 March), quoting Farke as saying: “I’m carefully optimistic that he can be in the squad.”

Farke’s optimism is good to hear but there is the realistic possibility that the young forward fails to be make it in time for when the Whites face Watford on Friday 29 March, with Joel Piroe more than capable of filling in.

This would cut Rutter’s chances of beating the league’s assist record, still needing two more, to seven matches. Looking at his form, it may seem an easy prediction that the record will be broken.

If the star is to miss the match against Watford, he will be left with a total of 630 minutes to bag two assists from open play. With one assist every 208 minutes, as per FotMob, Rutter could be taking it down to the very last wire.
