Leeds United: Fans jumping for joy after what Wilfried Gnonto said at Elland Road this week
Wilfried Gnonto has emerged as a key component of a side chasing promotion at Leeds United, having undergone a disappointing first few months of the season under Daniel Farke.
At one point, it seemed inevitable that the 20-year-old winger would exit Elland Road, with plenty of interest coming from the Premier League.
The rumours around Gnonto’s future at the club have continued, with Dean Jones suggesting that the Italian and Crysencio Summerville could leave if Leeds failed to secure Premier League promotion this season [GiveMeSport].
Wilfried Gnonto set to remain at Leeds United amid exit links
Of course, it is understandable that other European clubs will be keeping tabs on Gnonto, considering his form this season, having registered eight goals and two assists so far.
The winger’s goal contributions have been flying in lately, last scoring in the 2-0 win over Millwall on Sunday 17 March, with Lee Hendrie dubbing him “absolutely brilliant” as the opening goal was scored.
His recent comments will allow the Whites to breathe a large sigh of relief, however.
Speaking on the Leeds United podcast on Friday (22 March), Gnonto said: “I believe in my ability, I’m confident and I just believe in myself and the work that I put in even when things weren’t going well.
“You know how football is, it’s mentally tough and you can feel a bit down but I’ve always been lucky to have my family and teammates with me.
“I’m really happy at the moment, I’m happy because I’m finally showing what I can do and helping the team as well.”
Should the Whites be worried about the 20-year-old winger?
Although there are rarely ever any certainties in football, it would appear that Leeds should not worry about the future of their young sensation.

The only worry would be that there has been no recent update on Gnonto’s contract extension at Elland Road, with news emerging last August that the club were planning to offer him a new deal. [The Telegraph]
The likelihood is that the club are waiting until the end of the season to discuss any contract extensions, with Premier League promotion currently on the line and causing enough pressure already.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites are ready to sell a midfielder for £10.3million after what he told the media.
