Leeds United fans can breathe sigh of relief over Willy Gnonto as Everton transfer news emerges

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke had plenty of transfer issues to deal with when he arrived at the club in the summer.

The boss was seemingly unable to prevent several first-team stars from leaving Elland Road following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

But one player who perhaps surprisingly did stay in West Yorkshire was Wilfried Gnonto, who is now in double figures for appearances this season.

The Whites were clearly keen to keep hold of the young Italian, and they got their way, despite Premier League club Everton reportedly agreeing a £38.5million deal to sign the winger in the summer, as per Sport Mediaset (1 September).

Worryingly, however, the Toffees may come back in for the player in the January transfer window, which could give Farke some sleepless nights.

But the manager and indeed Leeds fans can breathe a sigh of relief amid the latest transfer news concerning Everton, with FootballTransfers reporting (5 November) that the Merseyside club are tracking fellow winger Maxi Araujo.

The report claims that the Toffees are keeping tabs on the Toluca forward, who can play at left-wing and left-back, after failing to sign Gnonto.

FootballTransfers added that the Uruguay international is being considered after Everton also failed to bring Luis Sinisterra to Goodison Park, with the winger then moving to Bournemouth on loan.

Gnonto hasn’t exactly set Elland Road alight this season, with an ankle injury disrupting his time on the pitch, but he still represents a superb option for Farke.

It remains to be seen exactly what happens in the upcoming transfer window, but Gnonto will more than likely play a central role and dominate the headlines.

In other Leeds United news, the popularity of one Whites ace “continues to soar,” with the player previously cutting a “hapless figure” at Elland Road.
