Leeds United exit route clear for Illan Meslier as advanced talks held for Karl Darlow transfer

Leeds United were always going to be in for a busy summer transfer window, with plenty of movement happening in both directions.

That has been the case in recent weeks, albeit with many more outgoings than incomings, with Ethan Ampadu the only new face at Elland Road so far.

He could, however, be joined by Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, with Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth reporting on Twitter (25 July) that Leeds are in advanced talks with the 32-year-old.

He has largely been a deputy during his time with the Magpies, but could step up to the role of number one under Daniel Farke at Elland Road.

And that would undoubtedly mean an exit for Illan Meslier, with the young Frenchman having lost that position to Joel Robles in the closing stages of last season.

That will have been a major blow to Meslier, who was a revelation in his early stages at Elland Road after his initial loan move from Lorient in 2019.

He was quickly signed on a permanent deal after impressing at the West Yorkshire club, but his status has slowly faded, with a summer exit now looking very likely for the 23-year-old.

It would be a sad ending for a once much-loved Whites player, who boasts 30 clean sheets and over 100 appearances for the club.

But he can take on a new challenge elsewhere, with a fresh start at this important stage of his career and a hugely important number one jersey on the cards.
