Leeds United could cost themselves promotion after £25m transfer reveal

Daniel Farke will no doubt have one eye on the January transfer market for Leeds United as the opening of the window edges closer.

The Whites are currently second in the Championship table and are just three points adrift of first-placed Sheffield United thanks to their recent 1-1 draw against Preston.

Farke’s men have been one of the most dominant teams in the second tier this season and at the moment, it feels like nothing could slow them down.

While Leeds’ team is one of the best in the league, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t players who they could potentially explore moves for in the upcoming transfer window.

However, after a recent report from Caught Offside (20 December) which stated that the Whites would accept a fee worth around £25million for Pascal Struijk, fans would be rightly concerned about a decision that could be costly to Farke in his bid to win promotion.

Struijk is one of the best centre-backs in the division and has formed a formidable partnership with Joe Rodon this term.

And, even if a Premier League side such as Tottenham did make a bid in that region, it still feels like it would be a mistake for the West Yorkshire outfit to accept it.

Why would it be a mistake for Leeds United to allow Pascal Struijk to leave?

Not only is the defender now one of the vice-captains of the Elland Road outfit but he’s also emerged as a key cog in Farke’s set-up.

Although fans had half a season of a partnership between Rodon and the Dutchman last term, it feels like they’ve taken things up a level in the 2024/25 campaign.

Thanks to their efforts, the Whites have the second-best defensive record in the Championship as they’ve only conceded 15 goals in the second tier thus far.

The Blades are the team that just about beat them to the top spot with just 11 goals going against them.

While £25million is a decent whack of money, especially for a Championship side, it feels like it would be hard for Farke to find a player of the same quality as Struijk for a lower fee which is what they’d be looking for.

Hence why, if Leeds were to sell the centre-back, it feels like it would be a massive mistake on their behalf and one that could even cost Farke promotion.
