Leeds have Sunderland to thank if they’re able to seal last-min £20m bargain
Leeds United may have to reluctantly thank Sunderland if they can get this deal done ahead of the transfer deadline.
The Whites have until 7pm BST on Monday night to conclude their summer business, and they are still chasing deals which could provide the finishing touches to their squad.
Leeds have been rivalled by Sunderland on several occasions this summer, with their fellow newly promoted side having beaten them to the signatures of both Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki.
The Black Cats have got the better of their rivals on several occasions in the market, but this time around, they could be about to play perfectly into the hands of Daniel Farke and Co.

Sunderland opened the door for Leeds to seal £20m Gustavo Hamer deal
Leeds have shown an interest in Gustavo Hamer once again this summer, after making a failed attempt to land him at a similar stage of last year.
The West Yorkshire outfit may have been unsuccessful on that occasion, but they now have a perfect opportunity to secure his signature ahead of Monday’s cut-off.
Hamer could leave Sheffield United on a loan deal with the obligation to buy in the next few days, according to FourFourTwo.
- Hamer notched 18 goal contribtions from midfield in the Championship last term
- He had 10 goal involvements during Sheffield United’s Premier League relegation season in 2023/24
- Leeds have chased Hamer in several transfer windows
Clubs in both England and abroad have been alerted to the possibility of a deal, which could ultimately see him leave for a fee of around £15-£20million.
Leeds will surely be enticed into action by this asking price, and if they can get a deal done in time, then they will certainly owe a debt of gratitude to Sunderland.
The Black Cats defeated the Blades in the Championship play-off final back in May, and in hindsight, had they lost that game, there would surely be no way that Hamer would be available for such an insignificant outlay.

Gustavo Hamer would be a great replacement for Brenden Aaronson
Brenden Aaronson has continually frustrated Leeds fans throughout his three years with the Whites.
Hamer | Stats (per 90) | Aaronson |
0.26 | Goals | 0.23 |
0.2 | Assists | 0.05 |
6.43 | Progressive Passes | 4.05 |
4.46 | Shot Creating Actions | 3.67 |
1.3 | Successful Take-Ons | 1.29 |
0.17 | xG | 0.29 |
The American has never really produced to the level that was expected of him when he first joined, and he is simply not consistent enough for Premier League football.
With that in mind, Leeds must do everything that they can to secure Hamer, who is a much more exciting and creative player.
The reigning Championship Player of the Season has been a standout performer in the second tier in several seasons now, and he is ready for another shot at the top flight.
The Whites have already spent a significant amount so far this summer, but if they can find another £20m to do the Hamer deal, then they could certainly be rewarded for their investment.
