Leeds have one of the best players in the Premier League for his position, it’s gone under the radar

One of Leeds United’s summer signings has taken the Premier League by storm.

Daniel Farke was on the brink of the sack at Leeds 10 days ago, with the Whites going on to secure three big results to alleviate some of that pressure on the German.

Leeds’ latest 3-3 draw with Liverpool at the weekend was not only memorable, but also crucial to keep them at the one point per game average that Farke has so often hailed.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has earned his praises lately, but it is one of his fellow summer arrivals who seems to have gone completely under the radar in the Premier League.

Gabriel Gudmundsson has been an astute addition for Leeds

Junior Firpo was excellent for Leeds in the Championship, but given the struggles he previously showcased in the Premier League, it was evident that the Whites were going to have to upgrade on him after promotion, regardless of whether he stayed or not.

Leeds signed Gabriel Gudmundsson from Lille, and very few supporters batted an eyelid at the arrival, but it is about time the Swedish international gets the recognition he deserves.

Gudmundsson has been outstanding this season, and based on stats, if not the standard eye test, he has easily been one of the best left-backs in the top flight.

His attacking numbers are excellent, with FotMob recording the defender as having created 15 chances, completed 16 crosses, and registered 20 successful dribbles.

As for the latter, it’s a stat bettered by only 2.7 per cent of defenders in the Premier League this season, showcasing his importance in transition.

Gudmundsson has also won 85 duels so far this campaign, which is again a stat bettered by only 5.4 per cent of defenders.

The 26-year-old has been crucial at both ends of the pitch for Leeds, and yet very few people away from Elland Road have given him anywhere near enough credit for his adaptation.

What has Daniel Farke said about Gabriel Gudmundsson?

While he has arguably been Leeds’ best signing this season, there have been occasional concerns.

Leeds‘ defeat to Fulham in September was one of them, when Gudmundsson‘s own goal was the difference in the game.

However, despite the error, Farke refused to criticise the defender and instead opted to praise the attributes that he brings to the team.

He said: “He needs an arm around his shoulder and no words. It’s difficult to explain. He was concentrated on blocking the player, lost control of his body and was surprised by the ball. He was excellent today, with an excellent performance.

“He was so crucial for our game, a top performance. That he’s there with the spotlight is unlucky for him. He was the most disappointed guy in the dressing room. He doesn’t need any criticism.”
