Leeds have FA Cup winners omen after Sean Longstaff reveal

Leeds United beat Birmingham City on penalties on Sunday to secure their place in the FA Cup fifth-round.

The Championship outfit made it hard for Daniel Farke‘s side, but they eventually prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout.

Sean Longstaff fired home the winning spot kick after two Blues players had missed their attempts, to send the visiting supporters at St Andrews’ on 15 February into pandemonium.

Now, Leeds may have ambitions to win the tournament, and the former Newcastle man may provide them with a brilliant omen.

What is promising Longstaff omen for Leeds?

Longstaff was part of the Magpies squad that won the Carabao Cup last season, defeating Liverpool in the final at Wembley.

He played a crucial part, scoring the decisive penalty in the second round after a 1-1 draw with fellow Premier League outfit, Nottingham Forest.

Therefore, the last time that he scored a winning spot kick in a shootout, his team won the tournament, perhaps he could do the same for the Elland Road outfit.

Should Leeds be trying to win the FA Cup?

The Whites have not won a major trophy since they won the First Division title in 1991–92, before it was rebranded to the Premier League.

If they could end their 34-year wait for a major honour, it would cap a wonderful season for Farke’s side, but it cannot be the priority.

They are only six points clear of the relegation zone with 12 matches left to play, and survival must be the main aim for the remainder of the campaign.

They must not let their eye slip off the ball in the league, just because they have an opportunity to win a trophy, that would be disastrous, as West Ham could then catch them and send them back down to the Championship.

Obviously, another parade round the city centre would be very nice, but it cannot get away from the principal objective, to secure their future in the top-flight.

If Farke feels like he needs to rest players in the cup, to keep them fresh for the league, then he must do that, rather than going all out for the competition.

The Longstaff omen is a strange coincidence, but it will likely prove to be little more than that in the grand scheme of things.
