Leeds could land another Victor Orta gem as interest in Cunha grows

Leeds United could land another hidden gem this summer if Matheus Cunha arrives at Elland Road.

Sport Bild report the Whites are interested in the striker, and it is possible Victor Orta views him as another little-known star, like Raphinha was.

It would not be the first time he signed an unknown quantity, and Cunha would not be the first attacking arrival from Germany during Orta’s tenure, with Jean-Kevin Augustin joining from RB Leipzig.

Cunha also played for Leipzig before switching to Hertha Berlin, and he has scored 14 Bundesliga goals in total.

He is unlikely to arrive as first-choice, therefore, but he could push Patrick Bamford for a starting place if he impresses Marcelo Bielsa.

The Brazilian would add a different dimension to our attack, as he is a very skilful player capable of producing chances for himself through individuals moments of magic.

A goal for Leipzig against Bayer Leverkusen, in which he turned a defender with a genius bit of skill before chipping the goalkeeper, was nominated for the FIFA Puskas award in 2019 [Bundlesiga.com].

Leeds lack a player capable of producing something out of nothing, with the exception of Raphinha and Jack Harrison to a lesser degree.

Cunha could be a perfect impact sub in games where our Plan A is letting us down, as happened against Brighton recently.Leeds United

He makes chances for his teammates too, as evidenced by a return of 1.8 key passes per game in a struggling Hertha side this season, per WhoScored.

Remarkably, he also has three successful dribbles per game, a greater return than any Leeds player this term.

It would be interesting to see if Bielsa uses him as a centre-forward if he joins.

Rodrigo has adapted into an attacking midfielder after arriving at Elland Road, despite playing up-front for the majority of his career.

The Whites would benefit from such versatility and there is certainly potential for Cunha to become the latest gem signed by Orta.
