Karl Darlow will be regretting Leeds United transfer after Daniel Farke comments

The summer transfer window was an interesting period of time at Elland Road, and Leeds United strengthened their squad despite losing several first-team players.

Ethan Ampadu, Joe Rodon, Glen Kamara, Ilia Gruev, Djed Spence, Sam Byram and Jaidon Anthony were the men chosen by Daniel Farke to make the team stronger outfield, while Karl Darlow was brought in to bolster the goalkeeper department.

So far everyone has been given ample opportunity to show what they can do this season, barring Spence who has been suffering with injuries and Darlow who has found himself behind the excellent Illan Meslier.

Many people in the summer believed that Meslier would be one of the first players on his way out of the club following relegation, having lost his place in the side towards the end of the campaign under Sam Allardyce.

But despite some interest from abroad a move never materialised and the French Under-21 shot stopper has made himself the number one under Farke once again.

That raises questions as to why Darlow decided to join, when he reportedly had offers from elsewhere to be the number one goalkeeper instead of the understudy to a top young talent.

The suggestion has been that he was sold the idea of being number one when Meslier left, and when he didn’t he got stuck.

But Farke’s recent comments suggest the plan was always to keep Meslier at the club, and that will likely have Darlow scratching his head and regretting his move to the club.

“The potential of Illan is just massive,” he said. “When you have a diamond like him, you have to back him.

“He is the best goalkeeper in the division.”

With Leeds already out of the cup, there are limited opportunities for Darlow to get game time this season and it seems like another wasted season for him personally is on the horizon.

He’ll no doubt be regretting the transfer, and it will be interesting to see if there is any interest in January for him to leave so soon after joining.
