Junior Firpo proves Premier League credentials after what he did at Leeds United

Leeds United were unstoppable against Cardiff City on Saturday, slamming down a marker with the 7-0 thrashing which ended the Bluebirds’ unbeaten run.

Among two changes made by Daniel Farke ahead of the Elland Road demolition job (1 February) was the reintroduction of Junior Firpo to the starting XI, who reminded fans what they could miss if he does not agree fresh terms before the summer to stay in West Yorkshire.

The 28-year-old – who is free to agree a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club should he wish – provided three assists throughout a perfect afternoon for Farke’s men, and showed all his best attributes.

Firpo enjoyed his best Leeds form at the start of this season before injury struck, and having struggled during the Premier League days at Elland Road will now feel he could cut it in the top flight.

Leeds United would suffer huge loss if Firpo departs

Leeds United have been buoyed by the fact Sam Byram filled in well while Firpo was sidelined, but to get the Dominican Republic international back consistently is one heck of a boost.

Firpo rocketed up and down the left flank on Saturday and showed himself to be a player capable of a standard which wouldn’t go amiss in the Premier League.

Of course, as it stands, if Farke’s side were to achieve their non-negotiable aim this term of a return to the top table, Firpo would not be there.

Discussions continue over his future at a prime period of his career, but should Firpo leave the Whites, Matt Targett has been mooted as a ready-made replacement.

It remains to be seen how Leeds operate in the final embers of the transfer market, with incomings and outgoings still feasible.
