Junior Firpo has every right to resent Leeds United as public statement released
Daniel Farke will not want any disgruntled players within his Leeds United squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
Following a decision from the hierarchy at Elland Road, the manager may have to put up with a couple of glaring looks as the Whites prepare for a second consecutive season in the Championship.
The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris have kicked off, with football being one of the first sports to get going in the competition. For some players, representing their country at the Olympics is a dream.
Leeds’ decision not to allow Mateo Joseph to represent Spain at the games went relatively under the radar due to a lack of reaction from the player [Joe Donnohue]. However, Junior Firpo is a different story.
The 27-year-old was not granted permission to join up with the Dominican Republic team this summer, taking to Instagram [via Yorkshire Evening Post] on Thursday (25 July) to release a public statement.
“I tried in every way given the excitement that made me live this experience and represent my country in such an important and unique event. But at the end of the day, you have to respect the decision of the club I represent,” he said.
“I wanted to thank the coach and his coaching staff for having waited for me until the last moment and wish my teammates all the luck in the world. I will be cheering from home like anyone else.”
Junior Firpo speaks out after Leeds United make Olympic decision
Despite quite a subdued reaction, it is totally understandable why Firpo would be disappointed by the decision made at Elland Road. Dominican Republic boss Ibai Gomez even said he would be “a regular” in their upcoming matches.
Representing your country at the Olympic Games is one of the most important milestones for some athletes, and as one of the three overage players in the squad, his involvement would have been vital.
However, Farke cannot afford to begin the new campaign without a full squad, especially after missing out on promotion to the Premier League last term.

Firpo became an integral part of the Leeds starting XI after a difficult start to the season, finishing the 2023/24 campaign with seven assists.
Even with the new addition of Jayden Bogle on a £5million deal [John Percy, 20 July], the Whites are extremely stretched in the full-back positions.
Firpo will certainly understand, but the player’s disappointment will not disappear anytime soon.
In other Leeds United news, the Whites could lose both Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto in a new transfer update.
