Joe Rothwell in for rough Leeds United loan spell amid latest transfer developments

Joe Rothwell could be in for a rough spell at Leeds United after being linked to signing Josh Brownhill and James McAtee in January.

The Bournemouth man joined the Whites on loan for the season in the last transfer window and has had a positive impact in the midfield.

This despite being forced into the spotlight to help Daniel Farke’s side deal with the long-term injury concerns of Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev earlier this season.

Despite showing his class at Elland Road, the 29-year-old may be set for a difficult spell if midfield additions join during the winter window.

It appears that Farke and Co. are keen to add to the midfield conversation at Elland Road in January.

As well as the 28-year-old, the Whites have also made a “bold attempt” to sign McAtee from Manchester City with a fee potentially exceeding £20million mooted [CaughtOffside].

If Leeds were to bring in either of these midfielders, or both, there would be additional strength and quality available which may damage Rothwell’s first-team opportunities.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers man is a deep-lying playmaker of sorts and has played alongside Ao Tanaka who is more defensive-minded.

As a result, the addition of a new playmaker to the squad could leave the loanee as a backup option once again which will be a blow given his recent form.

It is unclear whether the Whites have the funds to spend on the likes of Brownhill and McAtee but if they do, it could be a frustrating moment for the current midfield ace.
