Isaac Schmidt given golden chance for first Leeds United start after new updates

Leeds United made several new additions to their squad during the summer transfer window with players arriving in all areas at Elland Road.

After they narrowly failed to gain Premier League promotion last term, the Whites have once again found themselves as one of the favourites to come away with the title.

However, after a poor start to their 2024/25 season where they currently lie ninth in the Championship, some questions have been asked about Daniel Farke and his squad.

Indeed, some of his new arrivals haven’t been integrated into the starting XI yet but there’s still plenty of time for things to change as the season goes on.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference for the Cardiff City game, Farke shared an injury update and admitted that Junior Firpo had been “struggling” with his MCL [Leeds Live, 19 September] which could allow Isaac Schmidt the chance to start.

The defender was brought in from FC St Gallen towards the end of the window in what was the “most significant” transfer in their history [FCSG, 30 August].

The 24-year-old hasn’t yet featured for the West Yorkshire outfit, only making the bench

Schmidt is a bit of an all-rounder, he can play almost anywhere across the pitch and has done so during his professional career.

However, he was brought to Elland Road as a backup to Firpo and is likely to play there when needed.

Despite Farke’s optimism of the Spaniard being fit, if Firpo isn’t 100 per cent for the game against the Bluebirds, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the German call upon the former Switzerland youth international.

This is the perfect chance for Schmidt to show Farke what he’s been missing and could be a turning point in Leeds’ season, especially if he can replicate his form from St Gallen.
