Isaac Schmidt ‘finished at Leeds’ after new developments from Portugal

Isaac Schmidt has been patiently waiting for a first-team opportunity at Leeds United.

The 25-year-old made his debut for Switzerland in the recent international break but has made just seven appearances for the Whites in the Championship.

The Swiss star admitted that he has had to bide his time at Elland Road but that the Yorkshire outfit has told him that he is in their plans for the future.

However, that may change following new developments from Portugal.

Sanusi bid could spell disaster for Schmidt

Schmidt will have hoped that Junior Firpo’s impending exit may have seen his playing time increase, but that seems unlikely after a new report about the Whites’ transfer plans.

Leeds are set to bid for Zaidu Sanusi, a left-back from Porto, with a £1.6million offer being prepared alongside a four-year contract (Africa Foot).

That would hinder the Swiss international’s bid to become the starter at Elland Road as the Nigerian has much more experience at the top level.

The 27-year-old has featured 128 times for the Dragons, with 28 appearances in the Champions League, so he boasts a significantly better CV than Schmidt.

Schmidt could decide to exit Leeds

With the Whites targeting a more experienced left-sided defender rather than trusting Schmidt to take over from Firpo, it seems like a matter of time before the former St Gallen man moves on.

Daniel Farke clearly does not rate his abilities, otherwise, he would have featured more than seven times this season in the second tier.

The idea that he could go from being a barely used figure in the Championship to a starter in the Premier League seems far-fetched to say the least, given the step up in quality that the Whites will face if they are promoted.

His best route to regular first-team football and therefore more international caps may be to seek an exit from Elland Road, as Firpo’s contract also runs down.

Schmidt may be willing to accept a bit-part role in the top-flight, but given his recent exploits for his country, he may well feel that he deserves more.
