Is Dan James finished at Leeds United? How latest injury blow brings internal decision into question

Daniel James has suffered yet another setback at Leeds United, with Daniel Farke confirming the winger’s problem on Sunday.

The Welshman has been a victim of multiple injuries at Elland Road this campaign and was unexpectedly absent for the Whites’ FA Cup win over Birmingham City.

James had just seemed to have returned to fitness from a hamstring injury, but Farke has now his wide man’s back issue.

The 28-year-old is supposed to be entering his peak years at Leeds, but some hard truths could derail the career of a player who has been a standout performer in LS11.

This is the reason why Dan James is finished at Leeds

James was a crucial part of Leeds’ promotion-winning side last campaign, and if he had been fit in recent weeks, would surely still be a regular starter for Farke.

But the truth is, he was overused last season, and although he was great, his body has been proven to be unable to deal with an excessive amount of minutes.

Dan James for Leeds in the Championship last season:

The best part of his game is his pace, and after hamstring and now back issues, which are allegedly making it impossible for him to currently sprint, James could lose his best trait.

His pace is what works so well in Farke’s system, and with his end product already a controversial talking point, the forward may now see his performances decline.

Add to the fact that the Leeds boss has now transitioned to a 5-3-2 formation, even if he were to deploy James as a wing-back, that could be far too much running for him to do, given his injury history.

Why did the 49ers give James a new contract?

The 49ers awarded James with a fresh contract in July of last year on the back of an impressive season for the Whites.

19 goal contributions in the Championship had everyone dreaming of what he could do in the Premiership with more experience under his belt.

The attacker will be on high wages for the Whites, and with him nailed down to Elland Road until 2029, it could now cause some concern.

James deserved his extension, but the length given may be seen as questionable, especially if things don’t improve in the coming months.

There may now be patience for James to return to fitness, and the 49ers will need to hope that their big investment pays off in the long run.
