Illan Meslier at centre of shock Champions League transfer race, Leeds fans will be staggered

Illan Meslier could be about to dramatically fail upwards as his inevitable Leeds United departure approaches.

The goalkeeper lost his place for the Whites in the crucial final stages of their promotion-winning Championship campaign last term, and the writing has been on the wall for him ever since.

Meslier is out of contract at Leeds at the end of the season, and as a result, he is free to negotiate with foreign clubs in as soon as seven weeks’ time.

Daniel Farke finally looks likely to be able to get rid of the outcast Frenchman, but it’s fair to say that everybody in LS11 will be staggered at where he could now end up.

Milan giants to battle it out for Illan Meslier

Meslier’s departure from Leeds has been inevitable for several months now, and while they were unable to get him out the door in the summer, they surely will this time around in January.

There have been several potential suitors for the 25-year-old in recent weeks, but a shock emergence from the San Siro has perhaps seen the most eye-catching link of them all arise of late.

Both Inter and AC Milan are keen to try and sign the shot stopper when his contract expires next summer, according to Tutto Sport, via L’Interista.

The Italian outlet understands that the pair of Serie A giants are viewing the Leeds man as a potential “bargain” on a free transfer, although they could be scuppered by the Whites’ own intentions.

The West Yorkshire outfit want to get the gloveman off their books as quickly as possible in the January window, which represents poor timing for both Milan clubs.

Whether the move to Italy ultimately materialises for Meslier remains to be seen, but the Whites faithful will undoubtedly be amazed to see that he could move to a Champions League club in the form of Inter.

Leeds need to waive Illan Meslier fee to seal January Milan deal

Meslier’s current wage demands at Leeds have created a potential problem for some of the interested parties in the past, but that surely wouldn’t be an issue for either of the Milan clubs.

They are two of the biggest clubs in Europe historically, and the Whites should surely be looking to play on their interest this winter.

It is understandable that they want to try and recoup some money for Meslier, but they would surely only be able to secure a small fee for him, which begs the question as to whether it is even really worth it.

The Elland Road outfit may instead be better served by indicating to the San Siro duo that they can effectively take him for nothing in January, in order to get his wages off the books.

Ultimately for Farke and Co., it doesn’t really matter where Meslier ends up, but from the player’s point of view, there will surely be a huge appeal behind a potential Milan move.
