Ilia Gruev drops hint about Leeds United future amid summer exit speculation

Ilia Gruev has dropped a hint regarding his future at Leeds United after seemingly talking like he’s ready to stay put for the upcoming season.

Despite ongoing speculation about a potential summer move, Gruev’s recent comments suggest he’s preparing for another year at Elland Road.

Gruev, who joined the Whites last summer in a £5million move from Werder Bremen, quickly became an integral part of the squad. His solid performances at the base of midfield were crucial in Leeds’ impressive run of form last season, which almost secured promotion.

Speaking to The Athletic on Friday (July 19) the midfielder said: “I don’t expect it to be like last year with the four teams who had so many points,” hinting at the stiff competition in the Championship.

“But I expect tough matches; it’s not going to be easy again. We have our goals and our games and we have to focus on ourselves,” he added.

It would be a blow for Leeds United to lose Ilia Gruev

The talk around Gruev’s future has intensified recently, with Borussia Dortmund and several Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing the 24-year-old [TEAMtalk, June 5].

According to other reports, Dortmund is leading the chase, and Gruev’s departure could be imminent if the right offer comes in [Patrick Berger, June 4].

Leeds, who narrowly missed promotion last season, would be significantly weakened by Gruev’s departure. The Bulgarian international was not just a key player but a steadying presence in midfield, crucial to Leeds’ tactical setup.

Losing him would be a massive blow, especially considering his role in their near-promotion and his growing value.

Therefore, the club needs to approach the summer transfer window carefully. While the Whites might look to bolster their squad, they must also be prepared for offers for other players.

For now, though, Gruev’s commitment to the new season seems steadfast, even as the transfer talk swirls around him.
