Ilia Gruev axed in two changes – Leeds United predicted XI v Sunderland

Daniel Farke could make two changes to his Leeds United starting line-up as they prepare to host promotion rivals Sunderland on Monday night.

Off the back of Leeds’ 4-0 hammering of Watford, a healthy gap remains present at the top of the Championship heading into one of the biggest games of the campaign.

Following the Black Cats’ win against Luton, the Whites have a seven-point cushion over Sunderland, making the encounter between the two sides a promotion six-pointer.

A win for Leeds would drastically increase their chances of a top-two finish, while a defeat would make the promotion race wide open heading into the latter stages.

In order to avoid defeat, Farke could make two changes to his starting XI, with Ilia Gruev one of those potentially set to miss out.

Leeds ready for promotion six-pointer v Sunderland

Illan Meslier will likely keep his place in goal, having played his part in preserving a clean sheet against the Hornets. Meslier impressed against Coventry prior to that fixture and will be looking to maintain his form heading into this one.

A full-back partnership of Jayden Bogle and Junior Firpo is likely to be the decision once again from Farke, with one change coming in the centre of defence.

Ethan Ampadu played alongside Joe Rodon against Watford, but the former could be moved into midfield to accommodate a return to the XI for Pascal Struijk, in a bid to sure up the defence against one of the Championship’s high-flyers.

To make way for Ampadu to move into midfield, Gruev may miss out, with Ao Tanaka partnering with the Welshman in a double pivot.

Willy Gnonto could be brought back into the starting lineup, in a perhaps unfamiliar role. Brenden Aaronson did little wrong against Watford but he could drop out to make way for Gnonto in the 10 position.

Dan James is the man of the moment

Dan James will undoubtedly keep his place if fit, having been the star man in the clash against Watford. James caused a threat throughout the entire game with Watford and could be key to success against the Wearsiders.

The Welshman has quickly established himself as one of the most important players for Leeds, and his pace and improved ability in the final third could be the deciding factor in the clash.

Manor Solomon will operate off the left flank, having registered a goal and an assist against the Hornets with Joel Piroe leading the line.

The Dutchman scored his 14th goal of the season against Watford and will be no doubt looking to add to that on Monday.
