Gretar Steinsson may need Brenden Aaronson replacement at Leeds United after what was said

Leeds United technical director Gretar Steinsson may need to find a replacement for Brenden Aaronson after Daniel Farke criticised the United States international for his finishing.

Aaronson may have found himself on something of a redemption arc after his return to Elland Road this season but that didn’t stop his manager from singling him out for his poor final-third play after their 1-0 loss against Millwall on 6 November.

The former RB Salzburg man has been ever-present in Leeds’ squad this term and has cemented his role in Farke’s starting XI.

Despite this, Farke shared his verdict on the 24-year-old’s recent performances in his pre-QPR press conference (7 November).

“If you have a look on the workload, he was the hardest-working player yesterday (6 November) on the pitch and won possession so often for us”, he said.

“With him what I criticise a little bit, he was in a shooting position from 14 yards, I want my No. 10 to be there with a better finish instead of putting the ball in the centre of the goal, choose one corner, be more tidy in the finishing.

“We spoke at half-time, that he runs too much, that he overloads the wings too much and then in the decisive moments not always there where it counts, close to a striker when he can make things happen”.

Leeds United should reignite their interest in Gustavo Hamer

While there are many attacking midfielders that Leeds could try and target, it still feels like Gustavo Hamer would still be the best option for Steinsson to explore.

Efforts were made in the summer to sign him from Sheffield United but the Whites’ bids were instantly rebuffed by their Yorkshire rivals.

His form in the 2024/25 season has once again been more than solid with the former Coventry man contributing to five goals across all competitions.

While his natural role is in the centre of the park, Chris Wilder has chosen to start the 27-year-old on the left wing for most of the season which outlines the versatility he has in his locker.

Hamer’s finishing ability feels levels above that of Aaronson’s and there’s no denying that his addition to Farke’s squad would help improve their chances of promotion tenfold.

Of course, only time will tell what Steinsson and Farke choose to do in the upcoming windows but a key area they should focus on reinforcing is that of their number 10 role.
