Farke could have Leeds United trick up his sleeve amid latest transfer news

Leeds United have been one of the best teams in the Championship this season.

The West Yorkshire outfit currently sit on top of the second-tier table and have a one-point gap between themselves and second-placed Burnley.

While their defensive line has been more than solid this term, it likely won’t be quite up to scratch should they earn Premier League promotion.

Which is why it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi being linked with an Elland Road switch.

The Bundesliga outfit have set a price tag of around £8.2million [Bild, page 12, 3 January] for the 28-year-old but, Daniel Farke could have a trick up his sleeve to help knock that fee down.

What is the trick that Daniel Farke has up his sleeve at Leeds United?

Last season, Max Wober spent the entirety of the campaign on loan with Monchengladbach, which resulted in the Bundesliga outfit wanting to acquire his services on a permanent basis.

In the end, the two clubs couldn’t agree on a fee with one another to allow the Austria international to part ways with the Whites and he ended up staying put.

However, with Farke now interested in Elvedi, the German has something of a bargaining chip with Wober that he could bring into play.

The 26-year-old has been injured for large chunks of the 2024/25 season and hasn’t been afforded much of a chance to prove his worth so, in reality, it wouldn’t be that much of a surprise to see him exit in the summer.

Elvedi, on the other hand, would be able to challenge Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon for a starting spot and perhaps even pip them to it.

A swap deal could be an ideal way for both parties to get the targets they want with little money being involved.

This is all just ifs, buts and maybes of course but on paper, it feels like quite a smart move for both sides to make.
