Ethan Ampadu drops Leeds United selection hint amid illness worries v Sunderland in Championship

Ethan Ampadu seems to have dropped a hint that he will be fit and available to play as Leeds United host Sunderland at Elland Road in the Championship.

It had previously been reported by Phil Hay on 8 April that the 23-year-old was a “major doubt” for the clash with the Black Cats due to illness.

However, Ampadu’s personal Instagram story on 9 April – which included images of him and Leeds’ next fixture and date – seems to suggest that the Wales international has overcome his sickness and will be able to feature.

Ethan Ampadu essential for Leeds United

Ampadu arrived from Chelsea last summer and has been a crucial component of Leeds’ promotion push under Daniel Farke.

He was initially used in his preferred defensive midfield role and cemented himself as a key member of the squad there until Pascal Struijk’s injury forced a reshuffle, with Ampadu then required alongside Joe Rodon in central defence – and he has been sensational in that position, too.

Ampadu has worn the captain’s armband with regularity in 2024 and has not missed a single minute of Leeds’ Championship campaign, playing the full 90 minutes in all 41 matches – and it seems he is set to maintain that perfect record of starts against Sunderland. In fact, the only game he has missed so far is the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Plymouth Argyle.

If Ampadu is indeed fit and able to play, there can be no argument that it will boost Leeds’ chances of what would be a crucial victory in their battle to finish in the top two.

In other Leeds United news, the club have reportedly set their asking price for Crysencio Summerville.
