Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s World Cup hopes look finished as early Leeds United return confirmed

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been sent home early from the England camp by Thomas Tuchel and is set for a return to Leeds United.

The striker realised his dream of getting the call-up after several years away from the Three Lions, clearly impressing Tuchel to be included in his 35-man squad for the international break.

England drew 1-1 with Uruguay at Wembley Stadium on Friday, and the Whites star got a chance to impress off the bench, but has now been sent home early along with eight other players.

He missed a close-range header to almost grab a goal in the match, and that might be the moment he’ll now look back on with heartache.

Calvert-Lewin wanted to reach North America with England, but the decision doesn’t bode well for his chances now.

England release statement on returns amid Dominic Calvert-Lewin decision

Calvert-Lewin’s miss for England was slightly reminiscent of his recent form at Elland Road, despite now being in the double figures for goals this season.

He’s been in a rough patch of form recently, and the lack of goals may have harmed his chances of impressing Tuchel.

Calvert Lewin in the PL this season

The news from the England camp dropped this Saturday, and it doesn’t look good for Calvert-Lewin.

It could be that Tuchel has seen enough of him already to know that he will not be on the plane with the rest of the England squad this summer.

Half of the eight have been sent home early over fitness and injury issues, while there was no reason given for Calvert-Lewin’s return in England‘s official statement.

Why this is actually good news for Leeds and Daniel Farke

Daniel Farke will most likely have to console Calvert-Lewin, who will now have a huge part to play in the Whites’ fight for Premier League survival.

One of the reasons why the striker’s early return is good for Leeds is that he will now be fully prepared, along with the rest of the squad, for the game against Manchester United on Monday, 13 April.

Another is that the Whites should now be hopeful of seeing an even more motivated Calvert-Lewin, who will look to keep Tuchel’s attention on him until this summer.

A motivated Calvert-Lewin is his best and most dangerous version, and Leeds will be hoping for some more goals from their star man from now until the end of the season.
