Dominic Calvert-Lewin named with Erling Haaland in key Premier League stat, but not for the reason you think

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has faced a struggling start to the Premier League season since signing for Leeds United.

Leeds signed Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer, after the striker had left Everton at the end of his contract.

The 28-year-old had enjoyed several strong seasons at Goodison Park, but has scored just once in his six appearances so far this season.

Calvert-Lewin was shocking against Tottenham on Sunday, with the forward missing a number of key chances for Daniel Farke‘s side.

Leeds have been told to stick with Calvert-Lewin, but the former England international needs to start hitting form quickly.

Leeds could have signed Ermedin Demirovic in the summer, but instead opted for a cheaper option.

Callum Wilson was considered, before decision-makers at Elland Road decided to sign Calvert-Lewin, and the former Newcastle United striker went to West Ham.

The 28-year-old had been expected to play a role that would largely involve him impacting the game from the bench, but, after Joel Piroe failed to impress at the start of the season, Farke has opted to start his new man.

Against Tottenham, however, the decision blew up in the German’s face.

Calvert-Lewin could not capitalise on the chances Leeds created for him, and was dominated in the exchanges with Micky Van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

With one big chance missed against Thomas Frank’s side, Calvert-Lewin’s tally for the Premier League season has gone up to four, according to Statmuse.

That number puts him joint-third for big chances missed, tied with Antoine Semenyo and Viktor Gyokeres, and led by Erling Haaland and Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Calvert-Lewin present for all of the wrong reasons

In the case of players such as Semenyo and Haaland, it can be pointed out that their presence in such a stat indicates how good their movement and own chance creation is.

Both players have scored six or more goals, with the Manchester City striker leading the Premier League on nine goals, so you may not have expected him to have missed so many chances, too.

The same can be said, to some extent, about Gyokeres and Mateta, who have scored three goals and two goals this season, respectively, but also have a body of superb recent form to rely on.

Calvert-Lewin, however, does not have the same goal return this season, or the recent form.

Leeds will hope that the striker’s chances will start to go in, but it has not been an encouraging start for the 28-year-old in terms of goals scored.

If he can replicate his hard work and hold-up play with that, he will become unplayable.
