Dominic Calvert-Lewin can haunt Newcastle for transfer decision in Leeds United showdown
Leeds United will want to extend their unbeaten record in the Premier League to eight matches when they travel to Newcastle United on Wednesday.
Leeds clinched a 1-1 draw against Manchester United last time out and were arguably unfortunate not to take all three points after dominating spells of the game.
Man United have since sacked Ruben Amorim in the aftermath of the point at Elland Road, with Daniel Farke avoiding the same outcome following an impressive run.
Farke was under pressure to keep his job at the start of December when his side were in relegation trouble, but a run of seven matches without defeat has seen the Peacocks pull eight points clear of the bottom three, and one player has been key.
Newcastle wanted to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the past
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has become one of the Premier League’s in-form strikers in the past month after scoring seven goals in his past eight games.
Hardly anyone could have predicted this purple patch from the Englishman following just one goal in his first 10 top-flight matches for the club.
But Calvert-Lewin, who joined Leeds on a free transfer after being released by Everton, has proven to be an outstanding signing, and it’s made even by the fact that he rejected a Champions League club before sealing his move to Elland Road.
Surprisingly, Newcastle were one of the clubs that showed an interest in capturing the striker on a free transfer, and even tried to sign him in 2024, according to The Guardian, but were put off by Everton’s whopping £40million asking price.
Newcastle instead shelled out big money for Nick Woltemade from Eintracht Frankfurt, and while he has become an instant success, Calvert-Lewin could make the Magpies regret not signing him.
Calvert-Lewin’s record vs Newcastle
When Leeds make the trip to St James’ Park on Wednesday evening, they will be relying on Calvert-Lewin showcasing his ruthless edge in front of goal.
Newcastle is a difficult place to go for any away team, and the Whites haven’t won there in three matches, last securing a 2-1 victory in January 2021.
Indeed, Farke’s men are winless in their last six matches against the Toon, but if anyone can change that narrative, it’s Calvert-Lewin.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goals scored against clubs
Crystal Palace – 7
Newcastle – 6
West Ham – 6
Burnley – 4
Chelsea – 4
Only in meetings with Crystal Palace has the 28-year-old scored more goals against a team than Newcastle, following his brace in a 4-1 hammering of the Eagles on December 20.
Calvert-Lewin is, therefore, even more key to continuing their unbeaten run in midweek.
