Daniel Farke’s £35m transfer failure has come back to haunt Leeds amid striker woes

Leeds United’s start to the 2025-26 campaign has been indifferent.

While the West Yorkshire club are four points above the relegation zone, results before the October international break were nothing to shout about.

Leeds’ defeat to Tottenham raised further concerns, with Daniel Farke’s side dropping to 15th in the Premier League table.

While many players were poor, Dominic Calvert-Lewin was amongst the worst at Elland Road, with the striker failing to convert two massive chances.

Now, there is a real fear that Farke’s transfer business in the summer may come back to haunt the Peacocks.

Leeds United will surely regret not signing Ermedin Demirovic amid recent striker woes

One striker who Leeds were linked with in the transfer window was Ermedin Demirovic.

The Stuttgart striker had an excellent 2024-25 campaign and helped the German club win the DFB-Pokal.

Demirovic was reportedly valued at £35million by Stuttgart in the summer.

As a result, interest was high in the summer, with Leeds reportedly enquiring to sign Demirovic in late August.

However, a move never happened, and the 27-year-old has remained at Stuttgart, continuing his fine form.

Now, with Leeds United only netting seven times this season in the Premier League, they are surely regretting now signing a first-class striker.

The additional firepower provided by Demirovic could have been the difference between relegation and survival at the end of the season.

Calvert-Lewin is clearly not up to standard, and Farke’s decision to make the former England international his main starter could prove to be his downfall at Elland Road.

How bad has Dominic Calvert-Lewin been at Leeds?

So far this season, the stats do not look good for Calvert-Lewin.

The striker has only found the net once, in the 3-1 victory against bottom-place Wolves, and is continuing to struggle in front of goal.

According to Fotmob on 6 October, the attacker has already missed five big chances in the Premier League, the third-highest in the division.

On top of this, this creativity is yet to yield results, with the striker having zero assists in the division.

As a result, the signing of Calvert-Lewin appears to be a gamble that is not paying off.
