Daniel Farke overlooked critical Leeds United flaw in the summer, it will cost them Premier League survival

Leeds United’s hopes of securing Premier League survival were dealt another blow on Saturday as they were beaten 2-0 at Burnley.

The Whites have now won just once in the league since the opening day of the season, and this weekend’s inability to beat a fellow newly-promoted side brought the reality home to them once again.

Brenden Aaronson missed a glaring opportunity for Leeds, who ultimately could not recover from goals from Lesley Ugochukwu and Loum Tchaouna.

There was an all too familiar problem for the West Yorkshire outfit during their defeat this weekend, and it is an issue that Daniel Farke and Co. should easily have foreseen in the summer.

Leeds have a woeful lack of firepower

There were concerns at Leeds surrounding Joel Piroe’s ability to adapt to Premier League football at the start of the summer, but they had plenty of time to address that before the season got underway.

The Whites needed to bring in a proven striker with an eye-catching goal record, who is capable of taking whatever chances come his way, even if he is hardly involved during games.

That undoubtedly comes at a heavy price in today’s market, but instead Farke and Co. opted to add two more options that bring their own concerns.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a dire injury record and is already showing that he needs four or five chances in a game in order to find the back of the net.

Leeds missed four big chances on Saturday, and that is now three consecutive games in which they have created more clear-cut opportunities than their opponents, only for them to have failed to win any of them.

It is an issue that will ultimately consign them to Championship football next season if they do not take their second chance to address it.

Daniel Farke must target proven frontman in January

Aaronson was at the centre of Leeds’ frustrations on Saturday afternoon, but he isn’t alone in not being at the required level for a Premier League attack.

Virtually the entire Whites frontline is now of the necessary standard to survive in the top flight, and it is baffling that they managed to overlook that flaw in the summer.

They simply have to get a poacher through the door in January, even if that means trying to dip into the loan market for someone who is out of favour at a top club.

Goals are the golden currency that can often drag a team to survival in the Premier League, and it is already abundantly clear that Leeds don’t have enough in their side.
