Chris Wilder may have handed Leeds promotion after Vini Souza injury twist at Sheffield United

Leeds United and Sheffield United are battling for top spot in the Championship.

The Whites take on Millwall on Wednesday at Elland Road, and could establish a two-point lead over Sheffield United, if they manage to win.

Chris Wilder’s side, currently sitting just top, dropped points in a 1-1 draw against Bristol City at Bramall Lane on Tuesday.

Leeds will look to bounce back following their shock 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Sunday.

Sheffield United hand title advantage to Leeds United

Despite their loss to Pompey, Daniel Farke’s men are the favourites to clinch the Championship title and it seems that the Blades might have handed over a golden ticket after a new twist.

The Whites and the Blades have locked horns throughout the season and are in a close fight along with Burnley for automatic promotion and the Championship title.

While Farke’s men have remained in control, the Blades are still in contention to give them a run for their money. However, the latest injury news may severely dent the hopes of Sheffield United in their title and promotion aspirations.

Sheffield United midfielder Vini Souza missed their game against Bristol City, sparking concerns over an injury. Wilder, when asked about the Brazilian’s absence, stated that he is undergoing scans.

He said: “He’s having a scan so we’ll have to wait and see off the back of that. We missed his presence in there.”

The absence of their key midfielder and uncertainty over his return may hurt Sheffield United’s chances, especially before their huge derby against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

In Souza’s absence, Hamza Choudhury and Sydie Peck featured in the midfield.

Leeds get Premier League golden ticket

Souza has been sensational in midfield this season for Wilder and the Blades, so missing him against Bristol City and potentially at Hillsborough on Sunday could be huge.

Gus Hamer is still not 100 per cent either, handing Leeds the advantage.

The Whites now play twice before that Sheffield derby, so six points against Millwall and Queens Park Rangers could take them five points clear of their Yorkshire rivals.

With plans already in place for the Premier League, it is vital Leeds don’t slip again after tasting defeat.

Manor Solomon has impressed during his spell at Elland Road and the Whites are ready to take the bet on him, informing Tottenham about their decision to hopefully sign him.

Should the Whites secure Premier League promotion, they will be signing the winger permanently.

That, among many other reasons, shows why promotion is critical to clubs like Leeds, who need to access the riches of the Premier League again consistently to really kick forward.
