Chris Sutton out of his mind after baffling take on Leeds’ performances under Daniel Farke

Chris Sutton has recently stated his support for Daniel Farke at Leeds United, claiming the West Yorkshire side has remained “competitive”.

Farke is under heavy pressure at Leeds after the Peacocks fell into the relegation zone on the weekend.

Despite a solid start to the season, the West Yorkshire side have fallen off a cliff in recent weeks, losing five of their last six games.

As a result, relegation looks increasingly more likely, especially with West Ham and Nottingham Forest recovering since their recent managerial appointments.

Nevertheless, Sutton has remained supportive of the German.

Chris Sutton: I wouldn’t be totally distressed as a Leeds fan

Going into December, there is little sign that the Peacocks can turn their form around.

Leeds face a terrible set of fixtures ahead, with a trip to Manchester City next for Farke’s side.

Yet, speaking to BBC 5 Live on 24 November, Sutton does not understand the recent criticism of the manager.

“I always felt Leeds were going to be in a relegation battle this season, but I think they have been competitive,”he said. “Their recent run is the poorest run of the season but they are still there and scrapping.

“If I was a Leeds fan, then I am not totally distressed. They need to score more goals – that is evident – and in recent games they have leaked too many, but on another day they may have been able to break and get something out of Aston Villa.

“I hope the fans are still with Daniel Farke and this does not turn ugly in a short space of time with negativity towards the manager. I think he has done a fair job.”

While Sutton is right that Leeds were unlucky to lose to Aston Villa, the current situation cannot be judged by a single match.

Many times this season, the Peacocks have been awful and completely outplayed in games they were expected to be competitive in.

Given the money Farke spent in the summer, the manager has little excuse as to why the Peacocks are incapable of picking up points from teams around them.

The West Yorkshire side have already played all of the bottom six, losing to everyone bar Wolves and West Ham.

Therefore, to say Leeds have remained competitive is an outrageous take, with the Peacocks are under serious risk of being cut adrift by Christmas.

Who could replace Farke at Leeds?

One name linked to the Leeds job is Brendan Rodgers. The former Leicester City and Liverpool boss has been out of work since leaving Celtic earlier this year.

Reports suggest that the manager is Paraag Marthe’s number one target to replace Farke if the German is let go.

However, it remains to be seen if this would be a success, with Rodgers helping to oversee Leicester’s relegation to the Championship a few seasons back.

Nevertheless, given his CV, the appointment could turn out to be a masterstroke.
