Charlie Crew can fill Leeds United void after new transfer failures at Elland Road

Leeds United had a fairly strange summer transfer window with some massive names leaving Elland Road throughout.

Archie Gray kicked things off with his move to Tottenham before Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter also sealed moves back to the Premier League.

Although the sale of Gray no doubt stung fans a little, his sale was needed for Leeds to abide by the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability guidelines [The Athletic, 3 September].

Glen Kamara was the next midfielder to follow which left Daniel Farke in quite a pickle, with two of his regular starters leaving a void to fill.

Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka were both brought in and are more than suitable replacements but, should one of the two get injured, they have little to no depth outside of Ethan Ampadu.

This is why fans were shocked to not see another central midfielder get added to Farke’s ranks.

Dejan Ljubicic was the one that was closest to a move to West Yorkshire [BILD, 30 August] but nothing came to fruition, with a January exit now mooted.

However, until then, the void could easily be filled by Leeds gem Charlie Crew who Farke has said is “full of potential.”

Charlie Crew to make next Leeds United step

Crew has been a regular part of Leeds’ matchday squad since the start of the season and has only missed out once after rare involvements in the previous campaign.

Granted, the youngster hasn’t yet made his senior debut for the Whites but the fact that he’s been featured on the bench shows the faith that Farke has in him.

In fact, the youngster has even been called up to represent Wales at the senior level for their upcoming games against Turkey and Montenegro.

Not only does this show how much talent he possesses but it also outlines how good of a job he could do for Leeds this season, if needed.

Should Rothwell, Ampadu or Tanaka get injured, it’s likely a weight off Farke’s shoulders to know that he has Crew ready and waiting if he’s needed.

Only time will tell how involved the youngster will be across the campaign, but, if he’s integrated into the team correctly, there’s no reason why the Whites couldn’t have another Gray-esque situation on their hands this term.
