Calvert-Lewin has perfect chance to end Leeds drought vs Brighton as dreadful stat emerges

Leeds United return to Premier League action with an away match against Brighton on Saturday.

Leeds are 15th in the table and supporters are happy with the start to the season under Daniel Farke.

Elland Road has been pivotal to some of their early results, with Leeds’ 2-1 win over West Ham hugely boosting their survival hopes.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has faced criticism for his poor form, and he must improve quickly if Leeds want to build momentum in the Premier League.

Brighton have woeful defensive record under Fabian Hurzeler

Calvert-Lewin’s goal against Wolves is the only time he has found the back of the net in a Leeds shirt.

However, after four matches without any success, the Brighton match provides him with a perfect opportunity to add to his tally.

Brighton have kept just one clean sheet in their last 21 Premier League matches, and they’ve only kept a clean sheet in 17 per cent of their games under manager Fabian Hurzeler (8/47).

This is the lowest ratio of any of the four managers to take charge of the Seagulls in the Premier League.

Brighton have an incredible wealth of top-level attacking players, yet in defence there are clear faults that Leeds can exploit.

The Seagulls have beaten Chelsea and Man City this season, but dropped points to Wolves and Fulham.

It’s clear that a team that sits back and plays on the counter-attack will have more joy against Hurzeler’s side, and Farke must utilise Leeds’ strength in defence to achieve an unlikely win.

Brighton are expected to beat Leeds, yet their weaknesses at the back mean that Calvert-Lewin could finally start showing his worth to Leeds supporters.

At the moment, it seems as if Calvert-Lewin is given consistent starts regardless of how well he plays, and that must change soon.

Lukas Nmecha and Joel Piroe must be in contention

Calvert-Lewin’s Premier League experience is incredibly valuable. However, Lukas Nmecha and Joel Piroe are also options that Farke hasn’t placed as much faith in.

Nmecha scored Leeds’ first goal of the season against Everton, yet the 26-year-old has only been given one start in the Premier League, admittedly not helped by an injury setback.

Piroe was excellent for the Peacocks in the Championship, scoring 16 goals to help Leeds lift the title in 2024-25.

Both forwards are waiting in the wings as Calvert-Lewin continues to disappoint, and Farke must use them if it gets to a critical stage.

Calvert-Lewin is in last-chance territory for Leeds, and should he fail to score against Brighton’s shaky defence, then more questions will be asked of the 28-year-old.
